Japan is known for its unique and just plain weird sense of humor, usually found on variety TV shows.
But you might be surprised to hear that Tokyo is slowly becoming a hot spot for western style comedy. Big name stand-up comedians like Dave Chappelle, Jim Gaffigan, and Trevor Noah have all sold out shows in the past year.
Besides the big names, local comedians are making Tokyo laugh with local improv comedy shows.
The Pirates of Tokyo
One such group is the “The Pirates of Tokyo Bay,” an improv comedy show that is a fast-paced mix of improvisational theater and songs. Since 2010, these purveyors of humor have produced not only monthly live shows in Tokyo but are in festivals and shows all over the world.
Their shows are among the biggest in Tokyo and attract a fun, spirited group of internationally-minded locals, tourists, and Japanese comedy lovers.
